Apple Crisp has always been a favourite dessert of mine. I remember as a kid, instead of asking for a cake for my birthday I’d ask for apple crisp.
This recipe is super easy to make & has tons of flavour! **With a Secret Ingredient**
My mom handed down the family recipe and over the years I have tweaked a few things. My mom makes hers with Spy or Mutsu apples; I make mine with granny smith because I like the tartness.
I have also added a”secret ingredient”: Apple Cider!!! This instills a lot of those mulling spice flavours such as cloves and all spice. It also helps soften the apples as it bakes, the cider also reduces down a bit creating an amazing sauce.

Granny Smith Apple
This recipe calls for at least 45 minutes but you can cook it longer. The longer it stays in the oven the softer and “mushier” the apples become. I cooked mine for about an hour because I like the apples to be soft almost to the point of being mushy, but the apple slices still hold their shape.
The crisp on top adds the texture and sweetness to the dessert. **Next time I will add chopped pecans or walnuts. I think it will complement the apples and add a crunchy surprise!!**
Once out of the oven, let it cool for about 20 – 30 minutes and then enjoy! Serve on its own or go crazy! Add a scoop of vanilla bean ice-cream! or drizzle caramel sauce on top! or BOTH!!!

As you can see I couldn’t wait any longer to try some! See how the cider gives it an awesome sauce!
